In the world of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, certain points on the body are known for their powerful effects on our health and emotional well-being. One such point is Heart 7, also called Shenmen, which translates to “Spirit Gate.” Located on the wrist, Heart 7 is a small but mighty spot that can have a big impact on how we feel—especially when it comes to calming the mind and soothing the heart. Last week we talked about the Fire Element in Chinese Medicine and how the Heart is one of the Organs for this Element. By treating this point, we are directly influencing our Fire Element.
Where is Heart 7?
Heart 7 is found on the inner wrist, just at the crease where the hand meets the arm, in line with the little finger. By placing one of our Ear Spheres on Heart 7, you can stimulate this point by gently massaging it throughout the day.
What is Heart 7 Good For?
This point is most famous for helping with anxiety, stress, and sleep issues, but its benefits go even further. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Heart is not only a physical organ—it also governs our mind, spirit, and emotions. When the Heart is out of balance, we may feel restless, anxious, forgetful, or even disconnected from ourselves. Heart 7 helps bring us back to centre.
Here are some of the main benefits:
1. Calms Anxiety and Nervousness
Heart 7 is like a reset button for the nervous system. It helps regulate the “Heart Shen,” or spirit, which in TCM is closely linked to our mental and emotional state. If you’ve been feeling on edge, overwhelmed, or constantly “in your head,” stimulating this point can help you feel more grounded and peaceful.
2. Improves Sleep
If you struggle with falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up with a racing mind, Heart 7 might be your new best friend. By calming the Heart and mind, this point can help quiet nighttime overthinking and promote a deeper, more restful sleep. It’s commonly used in acupuncture treatments for insomnia and disturbed dreams.
3. Eases Heart Palpitations and Tension
Some people experience physical signs of stress, like a racing heart or tightness in the chest. Heart 7 can help regulate the heart rhythm and ease emotional tension. While it’s not a replacement for medical care, it can be a supportive tool for calming the body’s stress response.
4. Supports Emotional Balance
If you’re going through a period of grief, emotional turmoil, or even burnout, Heart 7 helps reconnect you with a sense of inner peace. In TCM, this point opens the “gate” of the spirit, helping you feel more emotionally stable and present.
How to Use Heart 7 at Home
You don’t need to be an acupuncturist to benefit from this point. Try this simple method:
Find the point on your wrist crease, in line with your little finger.
Place an Ear Sphere on the point.
Gently press with your thumb and make small circles for 1–2 minutes.
Breathe slowly and notice how your body feels.

Do this during stressful moments, before bed, or anytime you need a little calm.
In Summary
Heart 7 may be a tiny spot on your wrist, but it can open the door to big shifts in how you feel. Whether you’re anxious, sleep-deprived, or just emotionally frazzled, this “Spirit Gate” offers a gentle and natural way to restore calm, clarity, and emotional resilience.
